November 8, 2005      Business Council Holds Inaugural Meeting

Hosted by Trustee Ed Guerrini, the newly-formed Heinz Center Business Council held its first organizational meeting November 8-9 at Fighting Island—an island in Canadian waters of the Detroit River owned by BASF Corporation.   The island, once a dumping ground for by-products of Wyandotte Chemical, has been reclaimed and restored by the efforts of BASF.  Eagles, coyotes, rabbits and many other species have now returned as the island comes back to its natural state.  During the two-day meeting members took part in productive discussions about sustainability issues and business, and outlined next steps for the group.   At the conclusion of the meeting members took a tour of the Rouge facility at Ford Motor Company, organized by Trustee Timothy O’Brien.  There they had an opportunity to view the green roof developed by Trustee William McDonough, and the innovative “big foot” ductless air tempering system, designed by Heinz Center Business Council member Thomas Kiser, that replaces air in the building with fresh air every 30 minutes.  For more information on how your company can join the growing list of Business Council leaders, please contact Anne Hummer (hummer@heinzctr.org) or Stacia VanDyne (vandyne@heinzctr.org)
