PROPOSED MEASURES: RECREATION & OTHER ACTIVITIES

Acreage of private lands on which public recreation is allowed, as a measure of the degree of availability and access to private land for recreation. (Fig. 1)

Percentage of farm income from recreation, as a measure of the importance of recreation in the farm economy. (Fig. 2)

KEY FINDINGS

Many people use croplands for recreation, including hunting, bird watching, fishing, and hiking. Some farmers gain income from these activities, whereas others manage their land in ways that make it more attractive to wildlife, and still others refuse entry to those seeking to hunt, fish or hike on their lands because of liability concerns.

Because croplands make up about one-fifth of the Nation's lands, and a much greater percentage in some regions, recreational activities on croplands are potentially important, at least regionally.

STATUS OF DATA & OTHER NOTES

No consistent or comprehensive national information is available on the recreational use of croplands. Most information on recreation describes visitation at a specific location or group of locations (e.g., national parks, state parks) or participation in a specific activity, with no accompanying information on the location of the activity (e.g., whether it takes place on a cropland or in a forest, and whether the land is public or private).
